Did You Create A Blog To Make Money Or Just Test Things Out?

This post may contain affiliate links for more info visit my disclosure page.

Many people create blogs everyday and everyday blogs are being abandoned all over the place.  They create a blog to test out if they can make money with it and if not, they’ll just shrug away and say “Oh well, that didn’t work.

Well, I can tell you right now that if you’re going to create a blog to test out if you’ll make money or not, then you’re not going to make money!

You see, when you “test out the waters”, you’re not fully committed to it.

Nope.

Do you test out a job when you’re looking for one?  No one allows you to do that (mostly anyway), you usually get hired and you do the job with full commitment.

Today, I want to point out the difference between creating a blog:

  • To Test Things Out (Like a Hobby)

and

  • To Make Money (Like a Business)

CREATING A BLOG TO TEST THINGS OUT LIKE A HOBBY

Let’s think about something you really wanted to accomplish in your past and you achieved it.

Did you give it only a little bit of attention?  Did you only put one foot in sort of speak?

I’d doubt it.  I bet you put all your energy in and made sure every step of the way was done, not only to completion, but as perfectly as you can do it.

Why is it so easy to create a blog and treat it halfheartedly?

  • It’s easy entry.
  • Zero to very low cost.
  • Doesn’t really believe you can make money with it.
  • Seems easy to blog.

What happens when you have this kind of attitude?

  • You don’t do the necessary research.
  • You don’t know how to write an effective post.
  • You don’t know how many posts you should write a week.
  • You don’t know how to structure your site properly.
  • You don’t know how to use keywords.
  • You don’t know how search engines work.
  • You don’t know how to narrow down or pick a niche.
  • You don’t know what a niche is.
  • You don’t know the real earning potential of your blog.
  • You don’t know you need training.
  • You jump from one shining object to the next.

Then what happens?  You quit.  Another abandoned blog.

You give up and say this doesn’t work because 3 months in, or even 6 months in, you’re like this is bullshit!  Then, you go back to your job being miserable.

Or, you can start treating your blog like a BUSINESS.

CREATE A BLOG TO MAKE MONEY LIKE A BUSINESS

When creating a blog for business, let’s take a look at the following factors:

  • Cost
  • How To
  • Time
  • Mentality

COST OF AN ONLINE BUSINESS:

Having an online business is no different than investing $50,000 on a brick and mortar store or putting $100K-$500K into a restaurant you want to start.

When you invest so much money, you feel like you have to commit all in right?

Well, just because a blog doesn’t have that kind of price tag, which is good for us, doesn’t mean we don’t treat a blog the same as a restaurant business or owning your own shop.

The cost of a blog is so little that most people can start for free.  But when you are treating your blog like a business, you should want to put money into it.

I don’t care if you say you have no money, because if you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way.

If you really want this business and make $10K/month with it, you need to put money into it and you’ll save up for it.  You’re not going to make that much from your blog if you don’t invest in it.

You can ask any successful blogger to see if they have costs and they’ll all say yes.  The cost of a blog is minimal compared to an offline business so take advantage of this and set aside or save up $500 and say this is what I’ll start with.

You don’t have to spend it all, but if you need something or want to buy something for your “online business“, you won’t feel like you don’t have the money for it.

Make a commitment with some money down, you’ll feel better about it and will take it more seriously.

ALL THE “HOW TO”s OF AN ONLINE BUSINESS:

Remember above, I had mentioned all the things you may not know how to do if you’re treating your blog like a hobby?

Well, this is why you need training and educate yourself on how to build a blog the right way and learn how to write effective posts that will convert.

There’s actually a lot to learn in the blogging business and it’s not as easy as just install WordPress, write some fluff posts, and that’s it.

There is structure to be learned and building a strong foundation for your blog is very important.  Don’t you want to write posts that can generate it’s own traffic organically?  You can learn how to do that.

You can learn about keywords, what they are, how to use them, and how to win with them.

Before all of that, do you have a topic for your blog?  Is it a good one?  Is it too broad or too narrow?  Your blog should be targeted to a niche.  This will bring you the best traffic that will convert.

Heck Yes! to Wealthy AffiliateYou can learn all of this at ONE place: Wealthy Affiliate – literally the best online training platform for building an online business with affiliate marketing!

I’ve tried building a blog before years ago and was in the same hobby boat as well and I thought I knew what I was doing.  Boy, was I wrong and I was so glad I found Wealthy Affiliate just before I started this blog.

I was incredibly thankful because I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time.  I knew the potential of blogs but I wanted training this time or at least some sort of instruction so I could do it right.

Then when I saw what Wealthy Affiliate offered, I was all in and signed up for a full year membership as their training is superb and it’s what I’ve been looking for!

As well, there’s a huge community of people in there, just like you, all ready and willing to help so you never feel you’re alone in your journey and can ask questions whenever you’re stuck.  The many success stories in there also helped me get motivated and keeps me going.

See my post about them here and find out what you can learn in there!

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU GIVE AN ONLINE BUSINESS:

Stop WatchesI hope your answer was at least a year or two years long!

Again, an online business is no different than an offline business, it takes time to reach the success you want with it.

Just because your blog is online, doesn’t mean it’s going to make you money any faster than doing it elsewhere.

A blog takes time to rank on search engines, you need time to learn, you need time to write better, you need time.

Yes we live in a fast-paced world nowadays, but that doesn’t mean you can make money fast either.  There is no instant online success and anyone telling you otherwise just wants your money and run.

I bet any successful blogger will tell you it took them either close to a year or more to get any consistent online income coming in.

That’s what I’ve been hearing and in fact, if you want big money like $10K/month, it’ll take up to three years.  But who cares, three years is not a long time.  I’ll work my ass off to make that much in 3 years from my blog!  Why wouldn’t I?

The time it takes you to make money from your blog is directly tied into the amount of time you put into.  The less time you put in, the longer it takes.  The opposite is true too, the more time you put in, the faster you’ll make money.

Really, if you follow the training at Wealthy Affiliate, you really can’t lose if you apply all the techniques they teach you and you keep at it, you will succeed.

It’s all up to you.

YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS AN ONLINE BUSINESS:

Is It Your Turn Too?I hope by now, you understand that your mentality or attitude towards a blog and having an online business should be one that is the same as starting an offline business that you invest thousands of dollars in.

When you put all your energy into something, you’ll help it grow.  When you put your mind into something, that’s when that thing can happen or achieve.

Think about losing weight.  You can really lose a lot of weight if you put your mind to it, and just decide this is what you want to do.  The rest will come to you, the how’s, the what to eat, everything will show up to you once you have determined that’s what you want to do.

Attitude is very important.  I’ve taken a “do or die” mentality for this website of mine because I’ve tried too many things already and I’m sick of hearing others making so much money from their blogs.

It’s my turn.

I too was someone who jumped from one thing to the next.  I’m DONE.  This is it.  This blog has to succeed.

If you have the same mentality, you will make money from your blog too.

  1. Good Blog,

People just think money is made over night starting their business as affiliate marketer or blogger, it does require effort, but nothing good comes without hard work. There are no get quick rich schemes in this world, only people who get rich are the people committed to getting rich and this takes time.

Your blog hits the nail on head.

    • Thanks so much Sam for your kind words. I totally agree with you that there’s no such thing as getting rich quickly, if that was true, everyone would be rich already.

I hope this post makes people think about what they’re getting into before they start a website and quit before it starts making money. 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by,

  2. Hi Grace,

This was a fantastic article. you hit all of the right points. I must admit that I’ve been guilty of the “hobby” mentality and not treating my own blog as a business. It does require investment. It does require time. It does require a lot of learning and trial and error. As a member of Wealthy Affiliate myself, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. Wealthy Affiliate is like no other. The training, techniques, community and culture of success is second to none. Thanks for sharing your personal journey as well. It takes real guts to start your own business and it takes even more guts to see it through.
