WHAT SWAGBUCKS IS ABOUT
Swagbucks is a program that you can sign up for free to earn points by doing things on the internet. This website has been around for 9 years as of this post and is known to be a safe place to be as it’s widely trusted.
If you’re surfing on the web and like doing it, you can turn your hobby into some extra cash with Swagbucks.
When doing things online, you will earn points that are called Swagbucks or SB for short.
As you collect more and more SB, you can at some point cash them in for gift cards to the retailer of your choice from their selection or put them in your PayPal account which is real cash you can download to your bank account.
Earning Swagbucks can be lots of fun as you’re going to be doing one of these things:
- Shopping
- Searching on the web
- Playing games
- Watching videos
- Taking surveys
- Discovering deals
I will explain each of these in the next section.
6 WAYS TO EARN SWAGBUCKS
There are generally 6 main ways to earn Swagbucks but there are bonus ways to earn even more which I’ll talk about in the next section.
Here are the 6 main ways:
Shopping:
To earn Swagbucks from shopping, you must start your shopping within their website. They allow you to make returns and that’s why you won’t get your SB for the shopping you did until 32 days after your purchase.
Each store/Swagbucks partner you shop at has their own terms and details (this applies to the other ways below too), so be sure to take a look at them before you start shopping.
When you go to the Shopping section of the website, you’ll see a bunch of stores you can shop at:
The bottom left of each store you can shop at will indicate how much you can earn, I’ve pointed this out with the red arrows in the above image.
Walmart offers up to 9% cash back which means you can earn up to 9 Swagbucks for each $1 you spend there. It may sound good but you need to look at the details:
When you see the details, you see only tires can earn you 9 Swagbucks per $1 and most things you would buy at Walmart have lower points.
When you find a store you’d like to shop at to earn Swagbucks, you click on the Shop Now button and start shopping to earn points!
Searching on the Web:
Swagbucks has their own search engine that is powered by Yahoo!, which makes it easy to earn points with just using their search browser.
When I first did a search, I got 20 Swagbucks for my initial search but then I didn’t get more Swagbucks as I searched more.
If you use it daily, you’ll have more opportunities to earn more Swagbucks through search though as they have instructions to add their search engine to default to your Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer browsers, but not on Safari.
Playing Games:
Earning SB from playing games is easy because it has nothing to do with how you play the game, win or lose. You earn Swagbucks when you make an in-app purchases.
The games range from Solitaire to Bingo, Wheel of Fortune, and many more. It looks like most games have an earning potential of 18 SB per $1 spent.
Watching Videos:
It’s funny to think you can earn money from watching videos but you can here at Swagbucks!
They get their videos from various partners like Hulu, Reuters, and the Food Network to name a few.
The earning potential here is very low, you only get 1 – 3 SB for watching videos. They don’t seem to offer more Swagbucsk even if you watch 12 videos that will take 2 hours 43 minutes, it’s still only 2 SB!
Taking Surveys:
You’ve heard of taking surveys online right? Well you do earn money for them, but how much?
At Swagbucks, you can earn as little as 5 SB or as much as 500 SB but these are just the ones that are available to me.
The more you fill out, the more it learns who you are, then the more they can tailor the surveys to you. So there will be some surveys that you won’t even qualify for in the beginning of you trying this as it learns about you.
If you get disqualified, you still get 1 SB for your time but I just hope that was not a long survey if this happens to you.
Also, I want to mention that the ones available to me takes 3 mins for the 5 SB and 73 mins for the 500 SB survey. That would mean you’re earning less than $5 an hour doing surveys.
Discovering Deals:
Swagbucks call this section “Discover” and what you do to earn SB is either try a product, sign up for something, enter a contest, among other things.
You can earn anywhere from 1 SB to an Uber offer of over 8,000 SB! An offer like Uber needs you to actually be an Uber driver to earn all 8,750 because only 3,000 will be earned at sign up if you pass the background check and you earn the rest when you take on your first paid passenger.
Other offers in this section are shopping deals like at Shoedazzle, they have a “Get Two Pairs for the Price of One” deal. You will get 2,600 SB if you fill out a survey and buy a pair of shoes to get another pair free.
The other offers on there could be just signing up for an account or as simple as printing out a coupon to earn 20 SB.
BONUS WAYS TO EARN SWAGBUCKS
There are three other ways you can earn Swagbucks:
- Referring a friend or family will earn you $5 just for the sign up.
- You also earn 10% of everything your referral earns in their lifetime. i.e. If your referral earns 500 SB, you’ll get 50 SB credited to your account.
- Swag codes look like coupon codes that you can find daily to redeem them for SB.
- They can LOOKLIKETHIS or LOoklikEthIs – so they are case sensitive.
- Find them on their site, Facebook, Twitter, blog and many other places.
- Once activated, you’ll have a set amount of SB to earn in a set amount of time to earn them in.
- Usually you will earn 10% of your goal.
- If your goal is 40 SB in the next 10 hours, you’ll get 4 SB for achieving this goal.
Swagbutton:
There’s another thing you can do to easily find ways to earn SB, it’s the Swagbutton. It’s basically an extension you can install on your browser, so as you surf the internet, it’ll tell you if there’s a Swagbucks opportunity on the page you are browsing on.
Swagbutton allows you to earn SB without being on the Swagbucks.com site all the time and you can start earning just from your usual browsing on the web.
REDEEMING SWAGBUCKS
It’s not hard to redeem your Swagbucks but you’ll need 300 SB minimum to start redeeming and 100 Swagbucks equals $1.
For example, you can redeem 1,000 Swagbucks for $10 to a store of your choice from their list or you can have that transferred to your PayPal.
There are over 150 stores you can pick from if you want to redeem your Swagbucks into gift cards, including Walmart, Amazon, and PayPal.
PayPal gives you the best options to download your money to your bank account so you can spend it anywhere you want.
IS SWAGBUCKS WORTH IT?
In my opinion, Swagbucks is not a good way nor is it a long term solution to making money online. Although not a scam, I just don’t think it’s the best use of your time to make money this way.
Sure you can use it for a few bucks here and there like if you’re going to shop at Old Navy anyway, then why not do it from Swagbucks and earn some cash back. However, it’s not going to make you a full time income.
It also takes too much time to get earn Swagbucks, especially for surveys, watching videos, searching the web, and some discover options.
I also don’t like the other ways to earn Swagbucks, you need to spend money in order to earn them like the shopping, playing games, and most of the discover deals.
I have a better way for you to make money online but you can use Swagbucks as a side gig in the meantime.

Hello Grace,
a good review about Swagbucks. Never heard of it or tried it and Iยดll probably never will.
With your explanation of the functions of the programme I would have come to the same conclusion as you. Now I can use my time for more important things. Thanks.
Hi Tobias,
Haha, you just did hear about it when you read my review. Thanks for checking it out, now you know about surveys and what a waste of time they can be.
Yes, use that time to build an online business instead. It will take time to build but guess what? It can make you a full time income one day that is earned passively. You can learn that at Wealthy Affiliate so check it out here!

I’ve seen this “SwagBucks” EVERYWHERE. And there’s a good reason why too, because it works! As I can clearly see in your review. But it is most definitely not a viable option if you want to make a full-time income off of. I’m glad it’s a legit website, I wouldn’t want to see thousands of people get scammed. I’m super glad I found this review, who knew where I would have ended up :O
I see you recommended Wealthy Affiliate. I just checked out your review on that as well, great work. I’m liking this site a lot. You are so honest ๐
It’s really hard to find honest reviews these days. So keep up the good work.

Hello Grace,
I am really glad I read your post on Swagbucks, I have heard a lot about it in passing, but nothing to my amazement as your information! I have a few friends that drive for Uber and they make Swagbucks but I was never really sure what that meant? I can truly say now that I am informed about Swagbucks and no I don’t think it is for me either… too much time online for way to little money in return! But the Wealthy Affiliate program now that is something that intrigues me and you say you love it? Can you give me a little more information on that program before I decide to get my feet wet? please… Thanks so much, it was a really great read! Debra
Hi Debra,
So great for you to stop by and glad you got all this info on Swagbucks here. ๐
I love the Wealthy Affiliate training program because you’re actually building an online business using the affiliate marketing model. It’s a great way to build something that’s long lasting that produces a passive income. You also learn from other awesome helpful members as well. Read this very detailed post about all the training and all Wealthy Affiliate has to offer!
Hope to see you on the inside!

Thanks for sharing Grace. I’ve never heard of Swagbucks before as a way of earning income. While I agree with you that Swagbucks should not be considered as a long-term income generating opportunity. However, it is still nice that one can earn something for spending time on the WWW. Something is better than nothing, right?
I suppose it will take a really long time to amass any income of significance. 100SB = $1.00 but it could earn you a cup of Starbucks every so often. So not too bad. I’d probably just use the search option and maybe the videos, but I will never consider the surveys.
One question though, is Swagbucks available internationally or is it just in the USA?
I also have to agree with you that Wealthy Affiliate is a better money-making option, particularly for the long term.
Hi Kevon, thanks so much for your insightfulness!
Yes for Swagbucks, it’s not a bad side thing to have if you’re going to shop at those stores anyway, so why not earn some SBs while doing it. It’s great to have the Swagbuttons too because as you surf the net, you will know where you will make some Swagbucks and if you were going to buy from that site anyway, it’s a win-win. I believe you can do it from anywhere, not just USA.
Building an online business is the best long term option where people can earn a full-time income from this type of business. Using the affiliate marketing model, building this website is not hard with Wealthy Affiliate’s step-by-step training. Check it out here and you’ll see what they offer!
Thanks for stopping by,
Grace
Hi Grace,
Thanks again for a very informative post. I came across Swagbags many years ago. At the time I was doing surveys and clicking links to get my credit. I did it for probably a few months before I packed it in.
I didn’t realise that there were other ways to earn credit with this program. So I was interested to read what you had to say. But you said it is not worth it so I am glad that I gave up on it years ago. It’s just not value for money. There are other ways to make money and I wil be checking out Wealthy Affiliate as you suggested so thank you.
You are right to quit Swagbucks when you did and as you can see, it wasn’t worth your time. That time could have started you on building something that is more meaningful, and something you own, an online business.
An online business is not built overnight either, it takes hard work and time, but you will be rewarded like any other business you build online or offline.
Many bloggers are making a full time income from their websites and you can do the same thing with the training at Wealthy Affiliate.
Even a little extra $500 – $1K would be nice right and this is passive income! So glad you will check out the training platform, hopefully I’ll see you on the inside!
Take care,
Grace
